irori

The Irori Masu collection is composed of traditional Masu boxes whose external surfaces are gently burnt.

This delicate burning gives a deep dark brown color to the Masu. After burning, the boxes are brushed and oiled to set the finish and prepare them to be used. The inside of the box keeps its natural light wood color.

When opening the box, elegant odors of Cypress and deep burnt notes blend and create a comforting feeling of home.

For over 1300 years, the Masu has played an important role in Japanese tradition. Originally a measuring cup for foods such as rice and soy sauce, the Masu came to be used as a measure of rice when it was common as a form of currency. For the Japanese people, the Masu was traditionally as valuable and important as the rice it contained. It is a tradition that remains an essential part of their lives today.

Ohashi Ryoki is a producer of traditional Masu boxes. For 60 years, the company has produced many kinds of Masu for different purposes. Ohashi Ryoki has developed various box shapes and wood treatments in order to encourage the tradition to evolve and widen its perspectives.
